I opened up a fairly big capacitor and it had wound plastic almost like a copper coil but on the plastic was this really thin metal. At first glance it looked to be aluminum. I burnt the plastic off with a propane torch and the metal was left behind. It never really melted just got a little bit brittle. Could this be tantalum?

a pic would help.

Thin Ta will oxidize in hi heat.

Or it wasn't a capacitor. was it from a radio?

Here are the pics. It came from a motorola unit. I think it was for boosting a signal. I know there is a name for it but I can't remember it right now. probably in 20 minutes. Your the tantalum guy right? If anyone knows I'm sure it will be you.

The top two green ones are aluminum foil mylar capacitors. the brown one is a ceramic capacitors and I can't see the other one well enough to tell on that.

Keep on looking
