Eric, I don't know if it was a Pyro-ceram, but, I had it for 2 yrs. and used it literally hundreds of times, even thru last winter, with no problems.

The big difference this time was thermal shock, due to the "wind tunnel effect" I had in the lab, (when using my new 6 inch extractor in the fume hood for the first time in such cold weather), sucked in too much cold air thru the roof vent. I used the dish earlier, (when the temperature was higher outside), in the day for several hours boiling the inquart; allowed it to cool enough in order to vacuum filter. By the time I started to heat the AR, it had gotten dark and temp dropped more than 10 degrees and the lab got very cold! As I realized that the AR wasn't warming up as usual, I felt the dish and it was cold; within 2 minutes, while I was thinking what to do, it broke!

So, on the next set-up, I'll use my white Corning with some sand, and will control the air intake.

I'm out of town, so I'll work on it when I get back!

Thanks!
Phil

Hey, Phil,

You can see through it. It looks like an amber Pyrex baking dish. Pyroceram is an opaque white ceramic dish made by Corning Ware. Beware, though, because CW also makes a lot of white ceramic dishes that are not Pyroceram. These seem to break faster than the Pyrex.

All of the Pyrex dishes are totally unreliable. Depending on the conditions, they might break the first time you use it or the 10th time but, they will eventually break. Guaranteed.

funny thing i have actually melted gold is those brown pyrex casserole, it has started as an incineration and i ended up putting the torch in it, i made the gold blob and even removed it from the casserole, all went well until it started to cool down and a major crack made it side to side.

i have a corning-ware casserole with cornflowers on the side that ive heated until the entire dish was glowing very red on my turkey fryer without so much as a scratch. i know that such abuse will shorten its useful life but sometimes, i just have to.
