My Plan - New to Refining. I would love a review please.

Do we want to try and tackle all of these steps in one thread? That will cover a lot of ground and some points alone could become very long if we can get the silent majority to pitch in. Sad to say, but too many just sit and take but seldom, if ever pitch in.

    Refining Gold Plating solution

...as it was used in mining, you can cement the gold on zinc. While assuring the solution is fairly basic all the time. Doing it in certified hood. Then filter and rinse well. Test the cake for cyanide presence - only if negative, proceed to dissolve the gold cake in AR. Dispose the barren...

    Introduction

Nice start on the fume hood....couple things though. 1. That metal collector on the top will last a little while, but will eventually corrode and will leak fumes. Rust could possibly fall into your reaction. 2. If those are the fans you're going to use, I'm not sure if those can pull enough...

    Just wanted to share

About a year ago, I started building nearly the same. Plywood, kitchen fume hood… Except the front is a glass plate (of a former glass table) to be shifted upwards. It's one of my UFOs (Un-Finished Objects). I'll paint the plywood with a plastic-like floor paint. This will seal the wood against...

Aqua Regia method with 12-13% Ag _inquart_

...of larger scrubbers. So what you want to do is possible. But maybe, considering tumbling and aqua regia can be done with a smaller fume scrubber and we will deal with the gold in chlorides with a silver cell. There are many threads in the library about building both hoods and fume scrubbers.

E-waste scrap in chemical to be processed

...with a lot of mistakes. In-line fan, 90 degree piping, and a poor choice of a vessel are lessons learned. I am so close to finishing my new hood, I can't wait. Room pressure is another important lesson to learn. Don't pull more air out than you can put in. I'm uploading my pics. The blower I...

    Gold Foam

The pic is to show contents & grill is garbage anyway. I have safety equipment, a vent hood and ceramic pan. I've done Silver Scrap with no issues. A HCL boil was done first. I got Gold to drop but still need to know about the Greenish paste. I appreciate your criticism, concern & the input.

Aqua regia gold stuck in solution electrolysis

I did not see any red cloud I can confidently confirm that. Im working on getting a stannous chloride test on some leftover gold on the anode electrode that you suggested earlier.

    Weird thing happening

Good that you have a hood, can’t say I’ve ever seen a refining hood on a porch before, a swing or a rocking chair, perhaps, but refining equipment is usually tucked away out of sight. But to each his own. Your description of what you did doesn’t coincide with the looks of the solution. I...

    Help

Okay, on the XRF. Brass will generally produce a white smoke and white/yellow ash in the crucible...pretty toxic stuff. If you choose to do stannous testing, make sure your wearing protection and doing it outside or fume hood.

    Fume hood design plans

There is plethora of comercially available fumehoods on the market, which aren´t suitable for refining. Mainly because the construction material is steel/sheet metal. You can have the best paint in the world, combination of HCl and nitric acid will found their way to the metal and whole thing...

    Accomplished nothing so far

Can you tell us about your workspace? fume hood, lab glass, PPE, etc. Answer: Outdoors covered work area. Use large fan to direct any fumes skyward. Standard Pyrex, borosilicate lab glassware. Hot plate, Mapp gas torch, standard crucibles, etc. Use safety glasses, chemical resistant gloves and...

    sulfuric acid from copper sulfate

The metal salts in there were likely hygroscopic as well. Many of them will yank water out from the air and NEVER will dry unless heated to the hundreds of degrees.

Blue sludge on bottom of beaker

I added water and most of it dissolved into solution. I might just need to add more water idk. Not messing with it for awhile while I fix my hood

    5th Button

...I consider the best method, is to tumble the remaining insolubles in a sodium thiosulfate water slurry. This does not need to be done in a hood as there is no fuming to deal with. A starting size lot of about 1 kilo of scrap will be handled in about 500 ml of water and a 1 measuring cup...

Such thing as a fume hood out the box ready to go?

If you ever look up centrifuge industrial fans, the bounce house blowers are pretty close to the same design, a little work and they make pretty good scrubbers and dust extractors. I use them for a lot of projects, I usually try to buy a decent quality one as to hopefully not get a crap one...

...everyday salts, not PGM salts. Regarding PGM salts always gloves when handling even cleaned vessels used. No other refining in that part of the Hood and everything that has been close to the actual site, is "burned" as can not be used elsewhere. Ask Orvi or Lou or the others refining PGMs...

Aqua Regia Digest 500 g material.

...to me. Just to inform you I work in a safe environment and being aware of some of the nasties that would present themselves. I work under a fume hood as well. And take all necassary safety measures into account. But thank you for pointing this out. The materials have been roasted and...

Aqua Regia method with 12-13% Ag _inquart_

I am reading about it I am convinced inquarting -> AR is the proper method for dealing with my scrap. I will have to built a fume scrubber anyway, big or small. I will update the progress later.

One step pyrometallurgy process for PCB

How to properly smelt Silver sulphide precipitated from KAgCn2

I have read the rebar method a number of time and I am planning to do performe the same soon. Can you please guide me to the exact amount of borax and soda ash needed and the temperature too. One more question, does roasting the AG2s helps? If yes then at what temperature. Thanks a lot for...

    Packing material for scrubber columns

A small one for flask in the hood, and a larger but less critical one for the hood. I'll probably shoot for 200-400 CFM for the hood. Hood will not be completely open during reactions/reagent addition, just for cleaning and stocking.

Does copper only knock out gold or does it also knock out silver?

With nitric or AR digestions, I just let the fumes condense out against the erlenmeyer neck and loosely cap off the flask. Inside the fume hood.

    HCL Zinc reactions

Ah yes, doing it outdoors with a mask and a DC fan pushing away the fumes

Electronic boards from cellphone and computer

You are not supposed to do this under pressure. Any tight container with a pipe feeding into the flame heating it will do. Better let the gases run through a water trap or two and then into the flames. Edit to remove typo.

    Cementing palladium with copper

yes, kurt. It is my first time working with Pd. I have a real lab with good fume hood, vacuum filter, hot plate but it have no magnetic stir, i have 20 liter flask/reaction vessel with heat mantel & overhead stir rod/bar too. I didn't know i will need 2.5 grams of DMG to precipitate 1 gram of...

Such thing as a fume hood out the box ready to go?

The metal duct is inside the 6" PVC pipe, any condensation flows on the outside of the 6" PVC pipe, that 6" PVC pipe terminates on top of the smoker as the 8" stack does. Evidence of that moisture is seen on the outer casing of the blower as it drips though the smoker top, if a lot of...
