I would say sugar is the most convenient way, maybe glucose-fructose syrup also. At least here where I live, glycerin is much harder to source and more pricey than any type of regular sugar.Thank you for sharing your knowledge @orvi ! Yes, the wet route is indeed a better option, and recently I've found that reduction using ascorbic acid shows great promise, though it requires heating the solution. However, I've never heard of using glycerin — thanks for the suggestion! It seems like an easily accessible and abundant alternative for me.
Ascorbic works, downside is higher cost of the ascorbic acid. Nice thing about the as we call it "lye and sugar" method is the waste is basic solution of sodium hydroxide and NaCl... Virtually harmless to the enviroment. All of the base metals will stay in the original liquid from which you dropped silver chloride.
I don´t know if this is a thing in your country and if you do waste treatment, but if yes, that is a nice thing - having a process without difficult waste stream.
