Amount of silver vs gold needed to inquart.

The term inquarting comes from the ancients meaning to make into quarters. So make the gold content at least 1 quarter and you'll be OK. If you don't know the gold content assume it is all gold and add 3 times its weight in silver. You can't add too much silver but if you don't add enough it won't dissolve in nitric either.

You might also try filtering the undisolved metal and disolve the silver chloride that is forming in the AR, with ammonium hydroxide. This may have to be done several times during the process. The silver chlolide can be recovered with the addition of nitric acid, and then reduced to silver with soda ash in a furnace.

The acid of choice would be HCl, not nitric, but I strongly advise against the attempt to process this way. Anyone finding themselves in the middle of a case like this is far better served to re-melt, adding a given amount of silver. The target percentage would be 25% gold, but it can still be processed with reasonable success when gold is above 30%. It's starts getting quite difficult unless you have a lot of surface area and thin pieces once you get to 40%. I'm assuming you are dissolving base metals with dilute nitric in this instance.

If the percentage of gold drops below 25%, there's a risk of the gold turning to finely divided particles, making recovery slightly more difficult, although it tends to yield a much cleaner material by exposing more of the gold to the acid, and allowing the particles to be better rinsed before dissolving.
