AR solution with au and pt in it

I have this solution with au and pt--If I remember,i must precipitate PT first with nh4cl,and then AU with metabisulfite--Is this the order of precipitation?thanks if someone can confirm my doubt----Arthur Kierski

It usually depends on which metal there is more of. If there is more gold, I'd drop it with ferrous sulfate first, then drop the Pt.

If you drop the Gold first you can cement the Platinum using copper powder in a well agitated solution. This will drop the Platinum as a metal and avoid the handling of the Platinum salts.

Copper powder, properly administered can give you Platinum of high purity.

I agree with 4metals but as your son is refining mixed jewellery scrap it’s likely that there will be palladium in there so a further separation will be needed which is simple by dissolving any remains copper with e palladium with nitric.
Arthur please ensure your son is aware of the dangers of PGM salts they are not to be ignored.
