In all cases, working in a fumehood of down the draft will protect you from most dangers involved.

It goes wothout saying, but still important to emphsis.
Some eye protection is a must, but it mostly for direct hit from splashes or flying debries from disassembly of boards.
 
Also, it depends where you're doing the process, if area is too enclosed, vapours will acummulate. Your respirator won't let you know that, but your eyes will.
Also, a biginners common mistake, to take a peek over the mouth of the recipient down to see "what has happened so far"... & wham! :shock:
