Just calculated it: iron sulfate hexahydrate stoichiometrically has 21.4% iron and 12.3%sulfur in it, so i guess it's safe to try.
I think most dissolve the copperas before use.
It did work. The catch is if you find a bag it will be really old. They renamed it a few years ago to Iron Sulfate, and it should be what your looking for. With that said, it still works as well or better than the older Copperas but I feel the age has more to do with why it works slightly better.
And, even then a tech grade Copperas would most likely work even better, but I haven't used them.

Why use plant food? It is not suitable for use although it may work. Even with tech grade reagents preparation is needed to assure contaminates are not introduced. You are not saving money cause crap in equals crap out. Use of copperas correctly gives a nice drop of superior color compared to SMB, in my opinion. Get some tech grade, it is not that expensive, follow instructions in link, you will be pleased.
