I tried steve's reverse electroplating system and just eat up the copper. I used battery acid. After reading some posts on here I thinking I should use almost pure sulfuric acid?

It's the moisture in the battery acid. It has to be evaporated down "a lot" and it can be a huge pain. Drain cleaner's that hold virgin sulfuric are around 98%.

battery acid can be used, but first, it has to be evaporated to 1/3 its original volume. Caution : hot concentrated sulfuric acid can cause sever chemical burns and will cause blindness on contact with eyes.

The gold just turns into black dust the will filter out? Then I was thinking of "cleaning" it with mautric acid. How's that sound ?

sounds like a plan. a wash in warm muriatic acid will remove the copper contamination, depending on amount, it could remove it all.
