Ok, so I had a problem. I needed to be able to stir a platinum bearing sludge while dissolving it with HCl + Chlorine. I don't have an overhead or even a magnetic stirrer, so I was forced to improvise. My solution was this: A bucket, with a garbage bag over the top to contain most of the gases. Tape was used to hold the bag around the rim of the bucket then a 1" pvc pipe was poked through the garbage bag and the pipe and bag sealed together with tape. The garbage bag allows for the stirring motion of the pipe, while it keeps most of the chlorine and HCl fumes in the bucket. It's fine to work around so long as you are outdoors.
It worked pretty darn well. For heat I boiled the sludge before pouring it into the bucket. Then I added the HCl and then the hypochlorite.
To keep the heat in I wrapped the bucket it an old polyester fleece jacket 8) It kept the contents from cooling too fast - I'd say it went from 60C to 40C over the course of a few hours. Heck of a lot cheaper than a heated reaction vessel with overhead stirring!
