I have a gold nugget that is 4oz. How do I get it assay? Or how do I find out the purity? I don’t know where to begin but I’ve tried to contact several gold buying websites with no luck. I found one refinery but not sure if melting it is the only option? IMG_2536.jpeg

It's going to be worth more than whatever purity it is in it's current form. Are you trying to sell it? I wouldn't worry about it.

If it's just because you're curious you can look up some videos on youtube about doing volume an density checks for a rough estimate.

I think a non invasive test is called for with this one.
Specific gravity and or XRF

Yeah SG would be my "at home" choice. As others have mentioned, nugget value uses spot price as a basis but large nuggets sell for multiples of spot. General location can add to the price and may give historical purity for gold from the area. If you are looking to sell or have it appraised, you might contact a friend of mine, Dave Bunk Minerals in Arvada. He may still be at the Tucson show.
