Only issue could be (possibly) flakes settling in to the holes of the tubes and/or in the pebbles.
I have a couple 3.5 gallon buckets where i drilled the holes in the bottom and 2 inches up the side walls, and took aquarium tube that I had sealed and poked holes in, then ran in a spiral from center out.
It worked good, but i hated rinsing the flakes off. Now i just used an end-sealed tube with holes that is put in first, with all the fingers/scrap on top to hold it down.
Sometimes, i like less, more.
