orthoboric acid vs borax

can i use orthoboric acid instead of borax to glaze porcelain before mud melt?

Boric acid is sold both by itself and combined with borax as a casting flux and fire scale preventative by jeweler's supply companies. I gather that it acts as a more active flux than straight borax - but my own supply is still untouched - since borax alone seems to work OK.
