Hay guys I have an iSHOR refining system and I was wondering if you could just melt all the Karat gold jewelry 10K 14K 18K all together and pour it into an ingot, and than run it through the iShor system to achieve 24k would this work you think? ..<*\\\><..TOM

you should be able to just run it through as is, either way its still goin to be a chunk o gold you be puttin in there

I am a newbie doing my research before starting gold refining as a hobby. I am a new Forum member today and very happy to find and read so much info at one location. My goal is to refine my gold as pure as possible 999+. I have a few questions on my mind at this time.

1) With the inquartation method...if treating with nitric acid dissolves the silver, copper, zinc, etc, leaving only gold precipitate...why use AR?

2) I understand that allowing the gold particles to get too small can result in them staying suspended and lost while filtering or decanting etc.....but, if you allow the gold particles to stay larger, ie large (2-3mm) pellets to stay in their original honeycomb shape don't you risk the possibility of some of the non-gold metals being shielded by the gold and not being dissolved resulting in reduction of purity? How does one find the middle road for best possible purity?

**My thanks in advance to Harold and everyone for your help!! I will be getting the books by Ammen and Hokes soon. Steve

Welcome to the forum steven. The big guns will answer that for you here later. Try looking at some of these books. Might help .

Welcome, Steven.

1) Aqua regia is needed because the gold is not yet pure enough - maybe 99%. The gold must be dissolved to purify it to at least 99.95%, in order for it to be worth near the gold price.
2) See (1).

Nitrate has been kind enough to share some information with me citing a patented electrolytic cell design to process karat gold. I just want to let everyone on the forum know that I plan on designing one of these cells and posting my work with it under the tutorials section. I will post videos of the entire process as time permits.

Steve

Hi Steve,
Are you still intending to produce one of your excellent tutorials showing how to refine Karat gold with a cell?

So far I have settled on using AP and HCl+Chlorox to process fingers and pins.... I would love to know if Karat gold can be processed with a cell that would remove the need for inquarting...

HillD2K,

Yes, I plan on finishing the karat cell tutorial one of these days. My time has been very limited lately as I am trying to finish a DVD of the Fingers tutorials from start to finish. The DVD should be done by the end of the week. After the DVD will come my Gold Filled Tutorial, followed by a short video on dropping Palladium.

Here's a thread that really seems to be promising for recovering gold from karat gold without the need to inquart:

Scavengers Karat Cell

Please understand that I'm very busy and will get to more tutorials as soon as I can.

Steve

Steve,

Thank you for your reply :)
Please do not think for one minute that I am pressuring you.
I, like most members here, deeply appreciate the efforts you have put into your tutorials and posts.

I am looking forward to your next instalment whenever it is ready.
