Sulfates have to be roasted at dull red heat to decompose them to metal oxides and SO2.

I'm pretty sure to remove cadmium and other metals mentioned the melting needs to happen for an extended period of time.

Yes when the cadmium burns off it let’s off a yellow to brown smoke and to let it soak
at temperature until the smoking stops is the usual procedure.
