Hello everyone!
I am Rachel I live in Yosemite Ca. I am very interestedin all of the stuff you guys talk about. I use to live irversion ca where there is a plac called the jurupa mountains discovery center. I use to go quite often. They have a place oucan go and dig up rocks and buy them for 2 dollars a pound ...at least they did about 10 years ago anyway I found this rock very very very heavy for its size its aboute size of my hand and it weighs 4 pounds 5 oz . There's nothing pretty about it its just very heavy and not magnetic
It's dark gray and it has very white shiny lookin metal in side so I took it to a gu hat has a scanning gun and it said 60 to 80 percent iridium.....I know I know it's not possible! Right? Or is it?

Welcome to us.
You are right not possible.
XRFs are notoriously untrustworthy with regarding to Rocks.

Here are a link for Ores:

We now have a section for Rock images so I will move this thread there.

Some chemical testing would be in order.

Crushing and smelting to lead and cupeling will result in a dark grey sponge like material left in the cupel that will be slightly to non magnetic and resistant to acids.

If true, you would be the only other person that I know of here on the west coast to of found such material.

I did with a deceased friend and deceased uncle back in "98".

We did not know what we had. We were Greenhorns.

Small pocket load with 4 five gallon buckets of ore from it.

We got approx 5 grams of sponge from 30 grams of ore.

We did not know what the sponge was.

My favorite "The one that got away" story.

Your rock is likely HIGH in arsenic - NOT iridium

XRF guns are only as accurate for the elements (metals) they have programed in their library - so if they see an element that is NOT in their library programing they will instead identify/call it a metal that is in the library programing

here is an example of what I am talking about -----------

https://goldrefiningforum.com/threads/false-iridium-finds.28009/#p295508

I am willing to bet that what you have is a rock HIGH in arsenic & NOT iridium --- in other words - it is a rock FULL of POISON
