Welcome to the forum David.
I'm in agreement with Goran on this subject. Whichever way you refine you make some nasties and are left with some waste that can't be recycled easily. We try very hard on the forum to push safety and environmental concerns to all members and some members, Butcher leaps to mind, manage to reuse much of the materials used and created. The big refiners can and do recover and refine much more than we can by sheer scale of economy but we can play our part in the waste stream. The membership generally recover and refine the easier treated materials saving the balance to sell on to bigger operators who have the necessary controls and equipment to treat this material, they also sort and sell the base metals etc which if done well finances the whole operation the value bearing material kept been a small part of the whole. Whichever method we use it sems to me that we are helping to avoid filling landfills and the need for even more mines and the energy needed to run them and process their product. Not all our members refine we have many that collect, sort and either sell or send for toll refining, there's room for all and the forum can pint you in the right I reaction to help you decide hat is right for you.
Good luck.

Thank you for the advice Nick And Goran. Likely I will do some form of it. Still much to learn and Hoke to read.
Be well, David

Hey all! My name is Tyler, I am 26 and in the North Central Massachusetts area. I am a voice/data technician with some electrical training and a background in video production (specializing in live productions). I'm a techy at heart. My trade gives me some opportunity to collect materials for scrap (particularly copper, but I do run into PC hardware dumps as well). I've never scrapped anything before, but I know a lot of people do it with success, am hard up for cash, and the more I learn, the more I think this is right up my alley.

I recently (in the last two days) learned about the prospect of recycling computers and their guts for money. Through my preliminary research I've begun to learn about refining the various metals found in these parts, which eventually led me here. I've read a bit of the introduction stuff and am continuing the poke around. I'm fascinated by the possibilities in all this. I've got a lot of reading in front of me.

Just wanted to poke in and say hi. You will likely not hear from me for a while (I will respond to replies here), as I''ll be reading and learning and such. There's incredible potential here, and I can't wait to learn what all your experience has to offer.

Greetings from Sweden.
Yesterday I melted my first gold-button. Started with about 60 grams of RAM-fingers and got 0.26 gram of gold, singlerefined. Next batch will be larger and will be refined twice.
I used AP to strip the fingers and HCl/NaClO to dissolve the gold, precipitated with SMB.
It´s tiny and probably not perfectly pure, but it´s GOLD and I love it! 8)

I've registered a while ago but I was engaged with the Guru's book Refining metals.

I am one of 'those' - I am using Linux OS and all of the free available applications - Linux as being free for anybody is very noble idea so this is the explanation of why the following:

I found the book in pdf on line in rather difficult state for reading; and reading of the screen is not my whiskey and soda... so what I did is:

Say that hypothetically I converted the book into MS Word format. Corrected what was possible, joined hyphenated words, changed spelling into British English (yes bloody Aussies!). Removed (the thousands of) paragraph marks, did some page numbering, removed millions of extra spaces and it is getting into very nice stage to get the final edit. I also kept the original prices that the author gives on the book - good grief looking at them is like a dream...

At present the book is in separate files - divided by chapters - in them. Each file has a name of type:

13hoke-ch-X-platinum-group-edited.doc

I intend to put the separate files into one whole book soon.

It does not have any pictures because the conversion from the simple .pdf removed pictures (and I wander if they are needed?). Chapters, headings and subheading are to be sorted out and turned into the Table of Contents which is probably reasonably easy. A different story is the index that will require a fair bit of work thought the text.

Now. I wander if one of our administrators or senior moderators or most of them would like to contact me and advise me on the use of the book on this forum as a free downloadable version free on charge of course.

I converted the book for myself on my computer. I am not sure what is the story with copy rights but I think they do not apply any more.

Would anyone be interested on working on this book for our use? I read several posts complaining about the quality of the book and the reading on screen. It could be redone nicely in proper .pdf, .epub, or mobi and placed here for others to download. Would it be still legal?

A bit more needs to be done and it would be nice if someone else helped us.

If an administrators or moderators think it is worth the effort and will be legal I will send the .doc format into their care. Of course my editing is just gratis - it is like a repayment for Kubuntu 12.04, Firefox, Thunderbird and LibreOffice.

I hope there will be use for it.

Regards
Juliusz

To our knowledge, there are no issues with copyright with Hoke's book. It has been reprinted and made available for those who may have an interest in buying. Readers here have tried, without success, to find living relatives of the author. So far as we know, all links of ownership are gone.

Your project is noble. Those who might gain something from your generosity should step forward and offer assistance. Unless a moderator has a personal interest in pursuing the project, I suspect you won't likely get any help from them. I know I can speak for myself in that regard, as refining, now, is nothing more than a pleasant memory for me. I have not refined since 1994, when I sold my business and retired. I come here to help where I can, but do not have the time that would be necessary to pursue the project as it has been proposed, nor do I happen to have an interest in doing so. My time is now already well consumed with the projects I have, so even my moderating duties, here, have suffered to some degree.

Harold
