Interests : refining precious metals
How long have you been refining gold? : haven't yet
What are you looking for in our community? : tips, tricks, and information so I won't have to learn too much the hard way... and new friends are okay too
How did you discover our Forum? : happened across it on the net while searching for more info on refining
Other: Hi all. So yes, I am actually a Chemist, and that's one reason why after I came across a gold refining YouTube clip I thought to myself "why am I not doing this?!". But I completely acknowledge my lack of expertise in this area and I'm eager to learn from others here. I have a friend who owns a computer service and repair shop. He just gave me a few boxes of boards and whatnot to see if I can give him a better return than the scrap dealers. I'll be reading all the great info here, hoping not to ask too many questions right away, and making sure not to spend too much time away from my wife as I disappear into the garage...

Matt welcome to the forum.
Take the guided tour here on the forum it will point you in the right direction and even as a chemist pay particular attention to the safety section, we take safety very seriously here. You have found the only source worth anything to learn refining and recovery and it's full of free and accurate information you just have to read and study to be able to refine all precious metals. You have a good start if you can access material but don't do anything until your sure your going to get it right or your friend may not be in future.
Good luck and I look forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks Nick. Yes, good advice on all accounts. I've read enough so far to realize that I need to keep reading a whole lot more.

How long have you been refining gold? : Have not started yet. Plan to make my first attempt at A/P process this weekend.
What are you looking for in our community? :Knowledge, wisdom, and little nugget of gold to call my own.
How did you discovered our Forum? : Quite by acciedent. I was watching some scrapping videos and trying to find out how much gold was in all the electronics that I scrap when I happened upon this forum. I read a few posts, then a few more, about 16 hours later (my job can be pretty slow) I joined the forum and have been reading posts everyday since trying to get as comfortable with the processes before attempting.
Other : This is a pretty vague one...other...my shoe size is 11.5 EE, my favorite food is sushi...oh not that kind of other? I have a bad sense of humor. I am really good at problem solving and very creative when it comes to figuring out different more cost effective ways to do things. I make way more money scrapping copper, brass, aluminum, wire and steel than I will likely make refining gold but there is just something about the process, the result, its just so.... aluring. I am hoping to start with the AP method, get used to that, gather outcomes data then move on to incineration, then maybe....in a couple years...A/R. My biggest quiestions are knowing how to process the different types of PM bearing material.
Look forward to posts from all you in the future!!

surfing the web trying to find information came across a lazersteve artical that had a link here

Welcome to the forum Walley.

Some things to help you get started, do not expect to make money at electronic scrap recovery and refining, at first it is easier to spend more money than you will see gold.

Hoke's book can be downloaded look in the book section or under members post as many include link in signature line.

The guide to the forum, the general reaction list and welcome to new members is a great place to learn much of what we discuss, found in the general chat section.

In the safety section you will find advice to help keep yourself and others safe, the thread dealing with waste will teach you how to deal with that problem.

Laser Steve's web site as well as other members like Gold-N Scrap web site and videos are good places to learn and see videos to get acquainted with some of the processes.

There is a gold mine of information and documents related to recovery and refining precious metals here on the forum.

How did you discovered our Forum? : I was doing a search for acid/peroxide as a copper etchant. google led me here.
Other : I would like to thank everyone that has posted their thoughts since this forum began. I have learned so much from reading the past threads. I can see where the people with experience that people look up to now, started out asking questions several years ago as newbies. (there is hope for me).

I have been using the AP process on fingers and pins from computers, a handful of airline test equipment pins (would love more of those... nice and thick Au) I'm collecting my foils and when I feel i'm ready and have enough to process i will try my hand at refining. I haven't heard of anyone paying top price for foil heh heh!

Again, thank you for sharing knowledge so that we don't all have to re-invent the wheel, And for warning us not to blow ourselves up doing stupid newbie things.

As you can tell I'm new to this. But I really only have one question. I know it it may not be simple. But I have watch so many video and read how to smelt. And they all say that you can purify gold or silver with a crucible, propaner and flux or borax. I have found it next to impossible to get it hot enough to really melt with propane. Now a cutting torch on the other hand gets it done in a few minutes. My question is do you have to us AR to refined gold? I have seen a video of a refinery dumping big amount of gold in a cuplet and heated and then they add borax covered it and then after a few mins stirred it and poured it in a mold. I have also read that most people call that melting and not smelting. Any help please would be great. My splash and button dont seem to test as gold or at least not as high as 10 k.

Hello reign21male,smelting is reclaiming metal from ore, you smelt ore. your trying to melt. you cant refine by melting. the metal must be dissolved and the different metals removed in the right order. you have found the right place to learn refining.study the forum. definitely go to the guided tour in Lazersteves signature line. find a link to the free download of C.M. Hoke's book "refining precious metal waste" it was written by a very smart young woman that wrote the book geared toward the common man who had no chemistry background. i would give you the link but the link i have is broken. its in the signature line of many of our members.

welcome to the forum.

Thank you geo and jimdoc. Sadly I really didn't want to mess with acid. The process not only seem in cumberome, but expensive.I wish the how to's I had read would have said this won't refined you gold. Instead it tells you it binds to the impurities that creat a slag that you can tap off. O well I guess i have a odd paper weigh. That you both for your time.
Regards

Hi Folks,

I am new to the forum, and wanted to introduce myself. Since I discovered this forum a week ago, I have been reading Hoke's book and the forum like a mad man. In the past I had thought about extracting PM's from electronic junk, but never got into it until I discovered Laser Steve's web site and this forum. In the past week I have been successful in processing some fingers down to a nice brown powder using AP, and acid bleach. I still have lots to learn. Luckily I live next to Silicon Valley where there are TONS of electronic scrap to pick through. I am pretty excited with this new hobby, especially with the price of PM's going up! This makes it easier for me to acquire gold, and silver.

cheers,
pete
