Welcome to the forum Mike.
We all wish we had a better understanding of chemistry, well most of us do, we have some very knowledgeable members who can help out if we get stuck.
To get you started read the safety section, download Hoke and the forum handbooks, free off many members signature lines, visit Lazersteve,s site and watch or better still buy his videos and spend plenty of time reading the threads and posts here on the forum.
It's amazing what you will learn by reading but the hands on experience will give you the real lessons and the knowledge gained by your studies helps you to reach a successful outcome. Don't rush into recoveries or refining, learn testing and start small until your sure you have it right.
Good luck.

Thank you nickvc! Yes I have been reading hokes book, 4 times and have numerous pages for reference in my notes. I plan on getting some things from lazersteve's web site soon. The safety section of the forum was where I started first. Great info. I do have some questions, but I will keep them to myself for now. I have more reading to do before I bother anyone with them.
Thanks again !

Study is great. The acquaintance experiments recommended in Hoke's book are an excellent place to start. As for asking questions, If you don't understand something or are not comfortable with what you have read, (or just can't find an answer using the search function [/hint]), then please ask. This is a dangerous hobby/profession. We would rather be "bothered" by your question(s) that find you were hurt, sickened or dead.

Enough said?

Yes, publius, if I have safety concerns, or questions I will ask. Thank you for the support. Safety and environment are my number one concerns. There are many people in my life that count on me being there for them. I will not let them down by harming them, or myself.

Spent many weekends as a teen exploring old mines in southern New Mexico, also a lot of rock hunting and lapidary work. Have not refined any gold, but I used to cut large pieces of quartz from mine tailings to make bookends and sometimes found gold/silver while doing so.
I built the house I live in by myself, have lived in this house 16 years now.
I found out about this site while looking up ways to get gold out of computers, someone said this was the place to go. I have to agree. Will be doing a lot of reading and will post a question now and again. Thanks.

Figured its about time I did the intro thing 8)

How long have you been refining gold: Oh about a couple weeks. Did recover and refine a little of a gram from some fingers. Test run. Now test running some fiber cpu's. Next will be the ceramic cpu's.
What am I looking for: Knowledge and help when I need it or can give it when I become more experienced
How did I discover: Youtube of all places. Told my wife I was gonna be a Youtube chemist  .

There you have it.

Happy Hunting!

Hello;

I have been looking for information about reclaiming precious metals from computer scrap. specifically hard drive boards and hard drive platters. I used to sell the logic boards and platters on ebay and I really think I would make more money selling scrap on ebay than I would by reclaiming platinum off a platter or gold from pins but I am the type of person who likes to do things. Don't get me wrong. I like money. Don't love it but do like it. I really could use more of it but money has never been my chief reason for doing things and the idea of processing gold silver and platinum is fascinating. I can't afford to waste any money though. I need results. It would be nice If I could just buy a bunch of chemicals and testers and just start a neat hobby to make some small platinum bars the same way a guy might make a blanket chest that he could have purchased for 1/2 of what it cost him to build. I already do that in my wood shop and can not afford to waste to much more in the pursuit of a new hobby.

I have seen numerous videos. you know the ones on you tube that are not very helpful and look like they will leave you with a bunch of brown powder that may have some gold in it. I saw a number of different E how sites that were almost anti helpful. I kept googling and reading and just the other day.......

I came across this forum. And what an exciting place. My head is spinning with all the great information. If I never even get off the ground with my tiny venture I still have a hardy "thank you very very much" for all those who participate in this forum.

I go by Boutselis
I am in my 40's and I live in north florida.
I enjoy wood working. a little fishing but have not gone as of late. I am a self employed handy man.

HEllO to all.

If you aren't willing to invest time to learn how to do it, and do it safely, then don't try it. You will have to invest money in some equipment, but that varies with where you find it.
That brown powder in the Youtube video is probably pure gold, its hard to say for sure not knowing which video you are referring to. Study study study, then proceed when you understand what you will be doing, and most importantly do it safely. And yes, read Hoke's book until you understand what she is saying.

How did you discover our Forum? : I enjoyed several port visits in Australia during my Naval service, and Perth was always my favorite. You see, Perth has an active mint with daily tours, and I'm just the kind of numismatic nerd who thought that was way more fun than drinking myself stupid. Part of that tour was a gold pouring demonstration that was both historically informative and hilarious. I never video taped that demo for myself, but figured somebody did and probably posted it to YouTube. That's where I stumbled upon samuel-a's awesome videos and his Gold-N-Scrap website. It was he who steered me to this forum and I am grateful. I have been lurking for a little while and have a lot of respect for how the moderators run things. It is refreshing to find a supportive community of like-minded individuals that has not split into feuding factions intent on "flaming" one another. This is someplace where I can come to learn and not be treated like an ***** (Unless I failed to read Hoke's book, which I am doing now).

I started to search about gold refining from computers a few months ago. Only found a Belgian forum but the part of gold in this forum is very small. Through Google I discovered www.goldrecovery.us and then this forum. I was amazed by the quantity of informations available here compared to French websites. As said before, I'm still collecting material and hope to start my first batch in the next weeks. I hope I'll be able to share my first shinny button in the gallery soon.

Sorry for my english but I think by reading and posting here it will improve.

Bonjour aux cousins du Quebec!

Bye

Sex : male

Age : 39

Profession : dump truck driver

Hobbies : driving and working on cars 1970 till 1980.

Interrests : My pregnant wife (she comes at the first place), making something from almost nothing, physics, learning new things, recovery of precious metals, and so on.

How long have you been refining gold? : Newbie and just beginning to learn, and i have just a little touch of gold fever.

What are you looking for in our community? : learn the right ways to recover and refine precious metals.
Sharing knowledge, i am still looking what i can share with this forum.
(I don't want to be a taker of all the precious knowledge, and give nothing in return.)

How did you discovered our Forum? : i found this forum because i got some free p.c. +- 20 pieces and a whole Lot more of old electronics.
I Googled, and found that the prices of everything was well worth of dismantling,
And i wondered if it was worth it to do the recovery and refining of precious metals myself as a hobby.

Other : Refining Precious Metal Wastes by C. M. Hoke, i read it complete , and will be reading it again and again.
And Gold Refining Forum Handbook, still working on it.
The Goldrefiningforum is already my favorite website !.

Thanks for making me feel welcome!

Best Regards,

Richard.
