well, id like to throw i bit in there. matter of any kind cant be destroyed. it can be altered, you can add stuff or take stuff away. no matter what you do to it, as long as you dont throw it away, it will be there and can be reclaimed. think of the worst possible thing you can do to something, say dissolve it in acid? well this is what we want to do, or how about burn it? well, we want to do this too. so really theres not alot that you cant do to precious metals and then not reclaim it.

Hi Claudie: In a nutshell, I look at about 100 MasterCard's a day and decide fraud or no fraud on customers cards. If I think it's fraud, I call the customer to verify and do a fraud report. I also look for new cards that are issued due to fraud applications and identity theft. Prior to this job, I was in retail loss prevention. At one time, the Loss Prevention Manager for all of the Home Depot's in North Calgary and Medicine Hat. It's been a fun career but I'm ready for a change and want to work for myself.
I remember one of the post's when I first joined by the nut who wanted to know how to sell his unlimited supply of gold on the black market. That was hilarious! At work we pass around e-mails from guys like him who try to get us to do fraudulent emergency cash adv's or credit limit increases and add our own comments. Then we shut down his card.

Hey, Maybe you called me the other day.

Darcy, Geo covered what you needed to hear, basically so long as you don't throw your gold out you can't lose it easily. Hoke helps everybody to learn how to test easily, cheaply and very sensitively so that you know whether your gold is in the solution or elsewhere, download it, it's free and even if it's not perhaps as nice as having a hardback copy it will do the job.
The other things to start looking at is sources of values who knows what you might find but without knowing what to look for it'll be a frustrating search.
Refining might not be for you but there's many ways to make money doing basic recoveries or even just buying and selling and the good news is that virtually all you need to know is on this very forum.

Thanks! I will get the Hoke's book...hardcover so I can really study it. I'm going part-time with my current job. I've made enough to support myself part-time for a year..so now's the time! I also buy silver coins..(retirement) Mostly Maple Leaf's and they've done well  Recovery is definitely something I want to do. I have a few mismatched china plates that appear to have gold trim and I think that will be my first recovery project. There must be something in me that can do this because I really enjoy researching it all...haha. You people are great and I really appreciate your advice and encouragement. Have any of you ever gone to a storage auction? Just wondering what it's really like...not the TV version.

since those type shows are driven by ratings like any other, i would assume most of it is staged for dramatic benefit. I've been to a few auctions locally but it was never anything like that. one thing that i have done that i don't see discussed on the forum is unclaimed baggage auctions. shipping companies around here periodically have auctions to get rid of all the crap that gets abandoned or lost during shipping. i look for small bags as apposed to large luggage or trunks. small bags tend to hold personal effects.

Welcome to the forum Ian.
Word to the wise ect isn't a correct contraction, I suggest you edit your post.
It might seem trivial but on this forum we strive for as much correct terminology and spelling as possible due to the nature of the chemicals and processes we use, plus it annoys the heck out of Harold!

I've looked up what we do with unclaimed luggage in Canada. Apparently we donate it. :| Have you ever found anything valuable when You did it?

How did you discovered our Forum? : I saw some refrences to this forum over at the scrap metal forum, this made the wheels start spinning.
Other :Im in the process of read, read, read at the moment. When im ready to pull the trigger i have 100 lbs of brazed copper connections, the brazing alloy should be a mixture of 5-15% silver. I also have almost 1lb of silver pulled out of small contactors and relays. Should be enough to get started.

At this point im looking at this as a hobby with the possibility of making some money.

what i really want answered and dont know where to post is
if i am using muratic acid (hydrogen chloride) and hydrogen peroxide, and i drop my gold with sodium(salt)meta-bi-sulfate (sulfur)++++++
wont the reaction end up giving off a deadly gas like hydrogen sulfide (H2S)??????

Jarrett,

Sorry for the late reply, I've been too busy to read the 'Welcome In' posts in quite some time.

A mix of sodium and hydrogen sulfides can in fact be formed this way if you add a metal higher than Copper in the activity series to the mix. This will be apparent the first time you test a solution that has already had SMB added to it with stannous chloride. For this reason it is important to expel all of the sulfur dioxide out of a solution before adding any metal higher than copper in the activity series. This occurs even in AR solutions, the only requirements are HCl, excess SMB, water, and a metal high up in the chart. The amount of gas produced is typically pretty minor unless you add lots of reactive metal to the mix.

You can read more about the process in the Sulfurous Acid document on my web site in the documents section. While you are there be sure to grab a copy of the Activity Series chart as well.

Here's more about H2S :

H2S Wiki

If you manage to dissolve some or all of your gold in AP (acid peroxide) don't add SMB, simply continue using the AP to digest more copper and the gold will precipitate as the solution saturates with copper. The copper chloride etchant document is another good read from my websites documents section.

Welcome to the forum,

Steve

My first name is Lisa. I'm here looking for info on gold, silver, and other metals that you would wear. I am sure there is safety issues regarding these as well? (I just saw and read a post about safety of chemicals and/or metals in general.)

If you are really here for info, then I suggest losing the spam link in your other post, and to not ad it to any other posts. Welcome to you if you are not a spammer, and goodbye to you if you are.
That is how it works around here. No spamming.

Hello!
I've been working in a food industry for the last six years and decided recently that it's high time for me to choose a different path in my life. I'm a newbie to precious metals, but fascinated with a topic and thrilled about possibilities. I still haven't decided yet which niche might be right for me within the trade, however I know for sure I'm in the right place and surrounded with the right people.
I just want you to know that I'm very thankful for all this knowledge you have accumulated and decided to share with me for free.
I hope that one day I'll be able to return a favour by helping someone in a similar way.

Kind regards,
Chris
