How long have you been refining gold or have interest in precious metals? : 10 years of interest & 5 years gold refining.
What are you looking for in our community? : Advice on refining and Mentors to learn from. I have refined gold but I am in the learning curve with platinum and would like to learn more.
How did you discover our Forum? : I have been a guest reader for 5 years since my first refining and I have read and learned much from the forum. I first learned of C.M Hoke here.

Hi there everyone!

I'm just in awe by this fantastic forum with a wealth of knowledge and helpful members. I have spent the last number of weeks reading about many interesting topics concerning PMR (Including Hokes) and I am sorry to have left the reading so late in my quest for precious metal recovery from electronic scrap (computers/servers/laptops) because I would have taken an entirely different approach!

Another noob to join the ranks!

I ended up here, from an Instructables post, found here:
http://www.instructables.com/id/TRASH-TO-TREASURE/?ALLSTEPS

Wanting/needing to find out as much as possible regarding the processes, before I even attempt to do any hands-on, I have been trawling the forum and saving useful posts in a folder for further reading/digestion.

I have also downloaded every electronic version of Hokes's book that I can find and will probably do 3 or 4 read-throughs before attempting any actual recovery/refining.

Safety is a critical point for me, along with anyone around me, so you can rest-assured that I will take every precaution necessary.

As I continue to glean information from this fine forum, I will steadily amass gold-bearing e-waste and wait for the day that I am actually ready to process it.

Thanks to all those who have laid the foundations.

Mick.

Welcome to the forum and may I commend you on reading and learning before any attempts at recovery or refining are actually attempted.
Notice I used two terms and as you read and learn more you will Im sure realise why I stated it thus.
If all new members would follow your wise decision we would have much less wasted discussions and posts about things that have basically been reduced to the bare bones.
I wish you well in your new hobby and look forward to seeing your first buttons.

How long have you been refining gold or have interest in precious metals? I have been interested in refining gold from e-waste since I started working at a landfill, so about 16 months.
What are you looking for in our community? I am looking to gain some knowledge about refining PM from e-waste and to learn from the experience of others on the forum.
How did you discover our Forum? I was doing some research the other day on scraping computers, and was on another forum and someone had mentioned that goldrefiningforum.com was an excellent source of info, so here I am.

I use to work in the vehicle maintenance shop for the city, but transferred to the landfill 16 months ago and have noticed that we receive a lot of e-waste. We don't recycle it, we just bale it with the rest of the garbage. So I have been thinking about trying to recover PM from it for awhile and finally started to put some e-waste aside. So in the last 2 weeks I scrapped 7 computers, a dvd player, a Samsung flatscreen tv, and a dell printer. Then today, a teacher friend wanted to know if I wanted some servers from the school. So I said sure and he brought me 13 IBM servers and 3 dell computers, I thought that was a pretty good score. So I am new, I am reading the forum, I am having fun, and hope to recover some gold and make a little money.

I am sure that there are outlets in your town or close by that will buy the scrap metals, wire, etc. that you get
after breaking down the systems. If you had a place close by that bought the processors, motherboards,
power supplies, memory and other items that would be helpful as you will probably not be very profitable
trying to process and refine the amount of gold that you could glean from what you are getting for free.
It is all probably P4 and newer processors that you are collecting right now.

Anyway, do some checking around for local buyers for the "e-scrap" with PM's in them and take the kids out
for some ice cream or a treat when you sell them. Or save the $$ you generate until you can purchase things
that you want to process and refine for the gold. You won't get rich but it will keep you busy. If you could learn
to test what you get (if it may have resale value for parts in Alaska), that might be a way to increase your
profitability as well. 8)

How long have you been refining gold or have interest in precious metals? :
I have had an interest in collecting gold since I was a child. I always wanted to be a gold miner or panner. Once I found an old gold plated audio cord my mom was throwing out, and saved it for like 15 years. I started collecting gold as a hobby about a year ago when I found a youtube video about gold in cell phones.

What are you looking for in our community? : Well, as I continue to gleam bits of information and bookmark interesting threads, sometimes the most interesting part is the pictures of amazing old boards you guys find. Good inspiration. But seriously, I hope to eventually be able to safely and responsibly purify gold I collected and hold it in my hand.

How did you discover our Forum? : Endless googling.

Attached is an image of two jars of gold plated I have removed from free electronics with a pliers. No cost. I do most of this while watching Netflix with my girlfriend. I know that my method is a bit unorthodox and probably not anywhere near efficient, but I enjoy it. More than I should.

While. I am (at least) months away from doing any chemical processes, does anyone have any suggestions on how to plan on processing the gold I am collecting? What worries/confuses me is that I probably have tin, lead, copper, solder, silver brass and bronze among other metals in there, and a little plastic, dirt, glass and silicon too.
I wonder if incineration is a good first step?

Most of that looks like a good candidate for the cell. LazerSteve has some videos on his site about it & you can search the forum for "Sulphuric Cell". It comes with it's dangers so be sure to understand everything involved before you start.
