How long have you been refining gold or have interest in precious metals? : I've been interested in PM since I was around 12, started prospecting with my dad around that age, I haven't refined any PM as of yet.

I've been a member of the forum a couple weeks now, I have learned more than I thought I would in a life time about refining from the wealth of knowledge on this forum. It's pretty awesome, at the moment I've got around 14 oz of sterling silver I'm interested in refining to .999, and in the process of picking up all sterling I can to process.

Curtis,

Welcome to the forum.

No wonder I can't get any silver - you're buying it all up! :p I am also a silver lover, and it's been a good buying opportunity for a while now.

You probably already know this by now, but you'll want a silver cell to refine your sterling. There is plenty of information here about them.

Best of luck,
Dave

Thanks, Dave

I'm only buying small amounts of sterling locally! Lol

Yes silver cell is where I'm at on my part of learning, the only real question or info I can't find or don't seem to understand yet is the eltrolyte solution, what it consist of how to maintain ect.

For now I'm just letting the sterling stick up until the point I have the knowledge to start the process 100%.

Curtis

The electrolyte is easy to make - if you can get some nitric acid. You simply dissolve some silver and a bit of copper in some nitric acid.

As you run the cell, other metals can dissolve and build up in the electrolyte. You'll get used to watching the color changes in the electrolyte and the form of the crystals to identify when levels are reaching a troublesome range.

Keep reading. You'll find a lot more detail on all the subjects. You'll see different recommendations and differences of opinion. It can get confusing. Keep reading. You'll know you're ready to start processing when you've sorted through all the different recomendations and you feel comfortable with the plan you've come up with for your circumstances.

If you haven't already, take a look at my Tips for Navigating and Posting on the Forum thread. There are some tips for getting the most from the time you spend here.

Hello Everyone, my name is Andrew, and this is my first post after reading for a few days.

Name: Andrew
Sex: Male
Age: 41
Location : Cincinnati, OH
Occupation: Self Employed, Small Resell business, auctions, buyouts, closeouts ect..
Hobbies: MMA, Billiards, Silver :) I just have a passion for the stuff, i like Gold as well but man Silver just makes me smile.

As much as i love Silver,i am new to the refining process. I have made a couple of attempts making Sterling bars which came out pretty well for just watching a couple of videos. I would like to perfect this process, so i am reading a lot of good material here. I saw a Silver cell making crystals video, and drooled for an hour . 7 years of buying and selling Silver and i didn't even know such a thing existed. Anyway, i will keep my million questions to myself and read for awhile but If anyone wants to suggest anything to me being new at this i am all ears. I look forward to discussion when i am better educated
and believe me i am passionate so that day will come. My interests are mostly hobby oriented, but if i could make a dollar or two while doing what i love then i wouldn't be mad either. Really just happy to meet good people who share my interest.

Drew,

Welcome to the forum. So you're the guy buying up all the silver in Cincinnati!! I'm in the Loveland/Milford area. We have a lot of other Buckeyes on the forum.

I wrote the Tips for Navigating and Posting on the Forum posts to try to get new members started in the right direction. Of coarse, read everything in the Silver category. There are a number of good threads and videos on silver cells.

Best of luck,
Dave

Thank you frugal, I don't know about all of it but if I had the funds I probably would. :) I am reading and learning. I might as well after being discussed by another terrible Bengals 1 and done game.

I lived in Tampa, FL for the 1976 and 1977 seasons, so by comparison the Bengals did well!

Tampa Bay Buccaneer's Win / Loss Record
1976 - 0 Wins, 14 Losses
1977 - 2 Wins, 12 Losses

At least the Bengals made it to the playoffs.

How long have you been refining gold or have interest in precious metals? : Never refined, I have been buying and selling PM's for years, Have done some prospecting, just don't have the time to get out and do it. I have always scrapped for extra cash and because I believe strongly in recycling.
What are you looking for in our community? : Knowledge of the process, ability to identify PM bearing scrap, possible refining at some point.
How did you discover our Forum? : Google search for e-scrap sent to youtube for a video on e-scrap pulled another video that linked to lasersteves web site then to the forum. Rather convoluted

Wow Andy Williams, i am also a life long resident of Colerain! Talk about a small World. LOL I grew up in the Bevis area and now in
Western Hills. Ya frugal Tampa had some bad years as well.. Still hurts though.

How long have you been refining gold or have interest in precious metals? : A few months. My parents moved into a gated community and they have a recycling facility, turns out the guard is cool and just lets me pick through the electronics bins (people throw away a lot of cool stuff!). Anyways I figured I might as well grab as much stuff that appears to have precious metals on it. I knew there was a DIY refining process so I just started a little stockpile of potential items.
What are you looking for in our community? : Exactly what I have found so far: safety, guides, advice, knowledge.
How did you discover our Forum? : I think I got a link from DIY indestructibles...Someone was criticizing a video and said this was the place the experts talk.

I'm not really looking to large scale anything here. I'm not even looking to turn a profit actually. I just think it would be really cool to have a home made piece of gold I recovered from stuff people were throwing away.

After going through a few beginner links I really appreciate how dedicated the form appears to be to safety. I just loathe seeing people that don't read warnings, wear proper gear, and are just generally arrogant.
I doubt I'll post much, but I intend to outline my first attempt (months from now I'm guessing) and see what the forum has to say about my forthcoming set up and procedure.
Thanks, and once again after going through the forum for only a few hours this appears to be a respectable and knowledgeable place with great respect for safety.

Welcome to the forum Eric! It sounds like you have the right attitude to fit right in here.

While you're studying, you can begin to tear down and stockpile the good bits from what you're collecting. Sell the steel, copper, aluminum, etc. as scrap. Sometimes, things can sell for more than their scrap value, so research any unusual stuff before you tear it apart. You'll find a lot of good guidance in the Types of PM Scrap and Where to Find Scrap sections.

For a good general jumping off point, follow all the links in the Tips for Navigating and Posting on the Forum thread.

Good luck with your studies!

Dave

Thanks for all the hard work and time our into this site.hopefully I'll be able to post about some results from refining in a month or so. From what I figure that's about how long it will take me to get some results, prob will be sloppy but you have to start somewhere and looks like I found the right spot.
