One easy way to find out wheter it is Ta or not is simply using google. read the type number, google for typenumber + "datasheet" and you will be able to answer most of the questions by yourself :)
I have a company in my town that does high temperature metal melting. I asked the owner about Ta and he said, that noone can melt Ta.
Well. maybe some NASA suppliers can, but better forget about melting. I think some volcanos reach more than 3000°C in their magma. If you live on hawai you may try it out -maybe.
You have to sinter it.

joshh,
In the second photo the ones with porcelain are arc gaps, if voltage climbs too high the in the circuit the high voltage will arc across the gap inside these components, these are not capacitors, I have no idea of what metals they are made from.

:p yeap... and I just picked up another135 pounds of MB's and fingered cards and there were a handful of nice older boards loaded with Ta's.

I also picked up 24 LSI cpu's, but I can't find info on them.
My favorite of this last batch are the 3 SUN MICROSYSTEMS boards. They have the SunGX 1134A2 and this outfit calls it a vintage cpu:

I hope you can shed some light on some of them.
Thanks!
Phil

also,
http://www.plasma-online.de/index.html?content=http%3A//www.plasma-online.de/english/identify/picture/sun.html

it definitely graphics processor. i keep pulling up something called a frame buffer. those big Motorola ceramic processors will have a nice gold plated cap and the legs should be about half gold plated. too bad they didnt plate them through the board.

Not trying to confuse just trying to identify and finding the best places to look for them.
Looking in the wrong box of many boxes.

Did fine some help with the visual ID, I think.

Telecommunications (e.g. mobile phones, infrastructure)
Data processing (e.g. laptops, mainframes)
Measuring and control engineering (e.g. voltage regulators)
Automotive electronics (e.g. navigation systems, electronic control units)
Medical engineering

Edited to add , post I was trying to quote,

This to not confuse people as to what it is that I'm buying. If you want to ask if it is a Ta cap then post away. 8)

Thanks for your interest

Hey Keith thanks for the pics.

Pic 2,and 6 have no Ta caps.

Pic 5 the yellow yes the blue no they look look monolithic caps that are though hole those might contain PM's not sure.

The other pics look to contain Ta caps but they are too fuzzy to tell for sure what is what.

I bought some more examples of Ta caps to put on the first page when they come in I will post the pics.

Keep on saving and send them when its worth the shipping.

There is no question, that there are companies out there, that are able to cast even tantalum. But with material like that you are better off to sinter them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sintering
With a torch and the tools we are working here, we are not able to make it melt.

Oldies but goldies...I mean silver....23 grams in weight by piece....

Those are pretty. I have found that the seem to run 40%Ag, 40%Ta, and 10% plastic or other weight.

If you process them let me know if this is right. and if you want I will buy the pellet if you get enough to ship from Romania.

Whats nice about them is you can just cut the bottom to remove the sulfuric, wash them, than put the rest in nitric and sort out what is left. What doesn't dissolve is either Tantalum or plastics.

Eric

What you understand by the term "enough"?
You are right about the content...But I didn't procees them ,because of some other bussines.
As for Ta capacitors....I have many types....and pounds...
