Hi my name is Tom this is my first day on the forum. I'm a Pawnbroker in Bloomington, Indiana. This past summer a Pawnbroker friend in a nearby town invited me over for a gold refining demonstration. As Pawnbrokers we see many 10k diamond cluster rings and I was interested in not only refining the gold but also recoverring the 100's of small stones in this type of jewelry . His process was amazingly simple using Aqua Regia, Urea, and Sodium Bisulfite. With only plastic kitchen utinsils I've done the process 3 times and recovered 9 oz. gold and full stone recovery. I"ve become fascinated with the procees and would like to share what liitle I know and learn more about formulas and better equipment. I have many questions. Are there any refining seminars out there?

Welcome to the forum.
The closest I think your going to get to a seminar is by visiting Lasersteves site and watching his videos which you can also purchase, well worth it. He also sells items which many members find hard to obtain at reasonable cost.
While your looking at the videos you can also download C.M.Hoke and the forum handbooks for free off his signature line, that will keep you busy for the next few weeks and will give you a good background to understand the many processes and the terminology used by forum members.
Be warned this is a huge subject and takes time to get to grips with but it's also addictive as I think you have already found, forum rules are simple treat others as you would like to be treated, religion politics or any contentious views are off limits and if a moderator pulls you up listen.
If after reading the books I suggested your stuck post a question and help will be on hand but please try to use the search function top right first as many questions have been answered many many times before.
Take particular note of the health and safety advice as we all take the safety of the environment, neighbours and ourselves very seriously and many of the chemicals can be extremely dangerous from the fumes to the spent solutions, advice on how to handle these items is all over the forum and need to be followed and understood as much as how to refine your metals does.
Have fun make money and BE SAFE!

Other : I ordered the kit from Megan Rose, and after a quick search of her name on here, it seems like she may have rubbed some of you the wrong way. I don't know her other than the emails we've exchanged in the past few weeks, she seems like a nice enough person though... I'm not new to internet forums, and I know how these forums can get full of drama sometimes. I don't really care though, I'm happy to get any help I can though so I'm glad I found this place!

The problem with her is; her information is not clear. She doesn't tell you what the reagents are in her samples, she just says she can sell them to you.She wastes too much time trying to be funny, when she could be getting the information easier to understand. I don't think that is very responsible on her part. And she doesn't take criticism well.

You will see when you get the pamphlets you ordered from her.
I don't think she liked all the free info here, but I am sure she checks in every once in awhile to make sure she isn't missing something.

I've got her material and read through every inch of it. I can see where she could have cut out quite a few pages with her stories and other stuff, and gotten to the point faster. I can see where some wouldn't like that about her material.
I on the other hand, I just love gold. Everything about it. So I don't care what she wrote about, if it's about gold, I'll probably read it. If she sent me a whole other book with stories about collecting gold and where she got it, and how she refined it, even if more than half of it was actually pointless... I'd read it all cover to cover.... twice.

I'm just so happy that I found this forum, because now I got alot more learning to do!

But yes... I can see where some would just want the facts. Fast and easy to read so they can start refining sooner.

Either way, I hope you don't mind all the stupid questions I'm probably going to ask. I can't wait until I can make my first button!

I have her platinum and catalytic converter pamphlets.I have never seen her Gold info. But I guess it is the same from what you say.

Get a copy of Hoke's and read it and do a lot of searching and reading on the forum for the different processes before you proceed. It will save you some headaches.

Ok for a formal intro
I had a crazy thought about platinum. did a lil goggeling and here i am.
I am a jack of all trades. spent the last 11 years in the oil industry. working derricks for the last 7.
i will answer any questions anyone would like to know.

what i really want answered and dont know where to post is
if i am using muratic acid (hydrogen chloride) and hydrogen peroxide, and i drop my gold with sodium(salt)meta-bi-sulfate (sulfur)++++++
wont the reaction end up giving off a deadly gas like hydrogen sulfide (H2S)??????

i am a high-school dropout and most of my knowledge is self taught. so excuse the ignorance for chemistry please. this was just a thought that came to mind when i did my first gold drop, and i about killed my lungs??

but then do i have my terms right? is it a sulfate or a sulfide? and whats the difference? wow my brain is powerful, but chemistry is a whole lot to absorb.(just thought of this while using the spell check)

any feedback would be great.

by the way awesome sight. lots of smart ppl here with a kind enough heart to share this knowledge. thank you all

Welcome to the forum.

muratic acid (hydrogen chloride) and hydrogen peroxide, and i drop my gold with sodium(salt)meta-bi-sulfate

Hydrogen chloride and peroxide produces chlorine gas. And sodium metabisulfite produces sulfur dioxide. You don't want to breath either of them. Adequate ventilation is a must.

Be safe so you can stick around.

Hello to all,

Thought that I would Drop my first post:

Name: Jason
Occ: Geologist
Local: Pennsylvania
Family: 1 wife, 3 children -14, 12, & 2 + 1-yellow lab
Hobbies: All outdoor activities, reloading, etc.
General: I have been recycling/scrapping for years as a source of extra income, copper has always been my scrap gold until about two mounths ago when I found this forum on google. In my line of work I have been working with just about every acid mentioned and had many onhand to start refining. I am 40hr HAZWOPER and emergency response trained.

I find it funny that I never combined what I do for a living and what I do for fun - until now.

Other: I think it's great the way just about every member/senior member states and cautions other members and newbies on the need for safety. The chemicals involved are no joke and if not treated with respect will drop a human like a fly.

Thanks for this great source of information.

P.S. - Also, you may be safe and mindful about your practices however, if you have children or pets your lab/work station(chemicals) must be locked up no questions no excuses. Many of the fluids/acids look like water until they are ingested by a child.

Safety first & thanks again
