Welcome aboard, Dave. Always good to have another refiner on the forum.

A couple I have dealt with

http://www.legend-reno.com/

http://www.dfcceramics.com/

There are also foundry supply companies that carry crucibles, tongs, etc. Google it.

Action Mining has a lot of stuff, but I've always found their prices to be somewhat high.

I'm sure others can add to this list.

Chris

Thanks Claudie and Chris.

I notice I do my refining different from what I have read hear. I use table top filters like http://www.calpaclab.com/products/18_Buchner_Tabletop_Funnel_Poly_Medium_Porosity_Fixed_Plate-5044-40.html and teflon diaphragm vacuum pumps supplied by a high capacity 5 HP 80 gallon air compressor and pump my AR solutions into a 30 gallon container. I am using SMB for the precip but I sure miss the Hydrazine (Scavox 35%). If I can find some at a somewhat reasonable price I'll switch off the SMB in a heart beat. Also big coffee urn filters from a restaurant supply house sure work well. A right size large plastic cauldron from Target and a plastic bucket from Menards are good for sponge capture. I know some of finer particles slip through but they're not much and can be gotten later.

I already like this gentleman. 8)

Welcome to the forum Dave.

Thanks Palladium

I haven't used a Watman filter or a porcelain buchner funnel in about 18 years. My Erlenmeyer vacuum flasks just hold a regular plastic funnel(s) with a coffee filter paper or two (doubled up when need be) folded into a cone for it for the smaller jobs. I use the plastic spaghetti straining cauldrons in 5 gallon plastic buckets for the bigger stuff. I use the table top plastic Buchner filter for the polishing dust jobs that I double pass through the AR and smelt the residual materials afterwards. I've refined thousands of ounces of gold this way with the purity range between 99.92 to 99.99.

Hello everyone,
My name is Mark Booth and I have been reading and enjoying the comments and lessons on this forum for a few months. I wanted to say first that the philosophy of shared knowledge and the quest for it is what I like the most. There is so much here that sometimes I don't know where to start. Let me dispense with the introductions and get back to the reason I am finally posting something. (it will be in the silver category)
Name: Mark Booth
Age: 44
Location: Alabama
Profession: Gold and silver buyer/computer scrap
Hobbies: All things metal. I started as a scrapper in general, moved on to non-ferrous metals, and finally to my true passion...Precious metals. There were a few forays into additional fields but I always seem to come back to PM's The gold buying business has been good to me but the knowledge in the recovery and refining of PM's is my goal.
Again, Thanks for the idea behind the entire forum and for the effort and input of its many members. It gives you a little more faith in mankind when you encounter such things and it seems to be getting more rare these days.
Sincerely,
Mark Booth

How long have you been refining gold? : Never have
What are you looking for in our community? : My Obi Wan Kenobi. Knowledge to determine what level I want to take this information.
How did you discovered our Forum? : Google
Other : Dealing with bullion metals for the last year and a half has led me to wonder where these coins come from and how refining may fit into my plans with precious metals. I currently have a precious metals purchase permit to buy PM's from the public. I also realize after reading a little about e-scrap that I may be able to get some of these types of metals from my work. We throw boards away all the time. I believe right now most of our stuff goes to the Goodwill and they sort it out. Sometimes IT dept. may get rid of some CPU towers as well. I know of 1 that scraps a lot of our aluminum waste but don't know anyone that is e-scrapping.

I should have did this from day one.

Other :

I joined the forum a couple of months ago. I made my first post early this morning, and I apologize for doing so without introducing myself first.

I've been involved is general scrap metal, buying and selling of antiques/collectibles, and the associated flipping of karat gold & silver scrap for many years, and have always had a curiosity about refining, etc. Periodic web searches on the subject proved disappointing.... mostly resulting in confusing, contradicting and often scary results..... until I managed to find this forum. While I still feel I'm a long ways away from any serious attempts, I am miles closer as a result of what I've learned, and continue to learn here.

I am very much enjoying this learning process. I'm currently contemplating the frame work of a plan to move forward.... at this time continuing to read, study and working on creating my own set of notes to help guide me. I'm a bit cautious by nature, so am comfortable taking my time to be sure I have a clear understanding of what I am doing.

I'm starting to accumulate e-scrap raw materials and some equipment. I'm setting aside a small percentage of the karat gold scrap that I encounter, but am still flipping the majority of it to keep things in motion.

I may have left an impression in my other post that I was some big-time scrap gold dealer..... I'm not. The 23 lots mentioned that were sold to that individual buyer in that 14 month period were not large (probably averaging $200) and would constitute something like 60-65% of the total scrap that has passed through my hands in that same period. All of this came to me mostly as a result of pavement pounding in pursuit of the antiques/collectibles & general scrap that are my bread & butter.

My ultimate goal here is to create a little hobby that fits in well with my other activities. I have no illusions of it being any kind of a money maker.... I'm mostly enjoying the challenge of learning something new.

Thanks!!!
