Interests : music, games, tearing apart old electronics, silver, environmentalism

How long have you been refining gold? : I haven't

What are you looking for in our community? : information about PM recovery from electronics

How did you discovered our Forum? : was mentioned on a scrap forum and this seemed like a better place fit for me

Other: Have been collecting computers for almost two months, but people around here seem to think 10+ year old computers are worth $30-$40 even with missing parts, so I've only been able to get ~15. I do find a lot of silver plate at less than scrap price, so am interested in learning to recover that silver safely. The computer scrap is really just to make some money, but I like silver and it would be cool to be able to recover and refine it myself.

Welcome to the forum Goob. There is a lot of good information here if you take the time to read it. I don't think you will be able to find a more knowledgeable group of people, in one place, anywhere on the internet. Best of all, it's free! Be sure to download your free copy of Refining Precious Metals by CM Hoke. You can find a link to that in my signature line.

Thanks Claudie! I've been reading a lot of things in this forum and it seems that my main interest, recovering silver from plated items, is going to be a bigger pain than it's worth. Will stick to sterling as a silver source and keep selling the plated stuff as scrap copper/brass till some time that I am more knowledgeable in this field. Also, I will be reading "Refining Precious Metals..." over the next few days, but have no plans to actually do anything besides collect cheap scrap silver and electronics till next year probably. It all depends on how long it takes for me to feel comfortable that I know what I am trying to do.

Don't sell it as scrap Copper or Brass. Boardsort.com buys Silver plated Brass. Chris is a member here. The current "Buy" prices are posted on the website. They pay upfront, which helps with shipping cost. Many members here have sold to him with good results, you should check it out. Get the most money for what you have.

I am already planning to sell my e-scrap to him whenever I get enough together because the two local places, both members here as well, seem to be selling to him also based on their pricing. The shipping will be too much to make sending him silver plate a reasonable option though. I'm already getting clean brass price, so I'd probably have to save up a gaylord full to make a couple extra bucks on it, and that's if the price doesn't drop again by the time I've been able to get that much.

Other : Been lurking around the forum for a couple of weeks, taking in the incredible amount of useful information. The members here take this stuff very seriously (which I really like), and the moderators work quickly to expel the riff raff. I'm a scientific, analytical, hands-on kind of guy. I learn best by reading, asking questions, and then cautiously proceeding. I couldn't ask for a better set of learning resources for precious metals than the posts and replies on this forum. Thanks!
