It takes very little gold to give color. It will be up to you to figure how many square inches of surface are in a pound of your average plated stuff.

Here is one post there are many others.

Free might be a bargain, but maybe not. Manufactures scrap may be the exception, as in like items in large quantities from the same processes.
This is a cope out answer gp is basically the same as gold filled but an extremely less gold used in gp.but if u ask for general yeild in gold filled people just answer around 2.5% not what the combined surface area of all pieces and the thickness of the gold that's left. And age of the pieces and don't forget to calculate the hours the piece was worn by previous owners and the activity they did while wearing to know the amount of wear of gold. A simple generally expectation is ~.0025 - .01% on gp. We're as gold filled the yeild expection is ~ .02 - .03% at least those were my numbers in past batches.

Gold leaf is about 0.12 microns. 1 toz of gold is about 160 sq. ft. That means 1 toz of gold over 1100 sq ft. is 0.02 microns thick!
While I have no doubt your calculations are correct, Barren will never see them. Sadly he passed away in 2017. A respected participant here on the GRF.

what is the average yield have people been getting... lets say per one lb of gold plated jewelry ? ( not including gold filled )
Approximately: Heavy thick copper or SS base watch cases 0.5 to 3 grams per kilo, antique lightweight ladies watchcases can go up to 15 grams per kilo or way over.
There is a lot of fake out there and you need an eye for it.

I've processed many types of watches and kept track of their yield so my client (with a good trained jewelers eye) can cherry pick the goodies out.

But what others said, it depends heavily on your material.

Edited to say: i just replied to a very old post... oh well.
