We tend to over protect animals here to the point of nature killing them off. This causes a steep and severe fluctuation in numbers. At one point our state had less than 10,000 beaver at which time we protected them to the point of it being a felony crime for killing one, 9-10 years ago we had 6 beaver for each person. Now we are back to them being a nuisance and open season year round on them.

As is usually the case when some clueless zealot is the one making decisions ;) these people look at headlines rather than the nitty gritty and ongoing effects of their decisions.

Yes and as long as one can "manage" populations things go well.
If you hunt the "deer" one need to adjust the level of predators too.
As always one need to manage the whole system so it is in balance.
The challenge today is that the cute ones create too much noise, especially in SoMe and other similar foras.

Emotions don't make good decisions.

You do know that whole post could be analogous for humans too ;)

So also money and profit interests💰.

Here in Sweden, it is the large forest companies that through lobbying (only my opinion) have a very large influence on the authority that decides how many moose can be shot each season.
The moose eat the tops/buds of young pines and firs.
-Even though we in the hunting corps are alarmed that there are hardly any moose left, each moose hunting area receives a permit before each new season that far exceeds the low population of moose, which (if the allocation was followed) would almost certainly result in an extinction .

But luckily, most hunting teams adapt to still limit hunting and spare animals with good "dispositions" with the aim of eventually getting a larger and productive elk tribe👍🫎. And sometimes even canceling the hunt for moose to save them.
Sorry if of topic🫣.
/Dennis
