caution you are working with some very dangerous gasses, if you heat or burn mercury only do so with a retort, to capture the fumes.

there is no need to use mercury for gold, You will find many safer method's here,
but they will also need to be understood, and safety precautions taken,

I suggest you take time to learn for a while, and then after you understand it, then go for the gold, if you are impatient or don't spend time learning you might just as well throw some of your gold in the trash now, because without learning understanding and safety, that is were your gold will go anyway.

goldsilverpro, im sorry, you right, i should write more.
Anyway, my quastion was who have any idea how to deal with mercury in refining the gold.
after i finish the nitric acid bath, and i got the golden pices, i wash the result by distilled water. i put on them mercury and Melt the gold in mercury, then i heat the result to get the mercury as gas (with all the other metal) and got a peice of pure gold, is hat proccess CORRECT ??

Im Sorry guys for my english, its not my mther tounge language.
No problem at all with your English. You're doing just fine.

Mercury has no place in refining. Gold is not refined with mercury, it is recovered from ores with mercury, and even that is now frowned upon.

Assuming you were to use mercury to recover gold from ores, it should be eliminated in a retort. That does not eliminate any of the base metals, it simply evaporates, leaving everything else behind. The retorted gold still needs to be refined, which is generally done chemically.

Gold is purified by dissolving and selective precipitation. You can read about the process in Hoke, which would be very helpful for you in learning how to refine.

butcher, Harold_V, Thanks alot.
Im still reading here, and ever day i got new information, like just today i knew that i can heat the nitric acid, i was working with the room tempreture, and i found that i can heat it, it will make the reaction faster.
I have to try tomorrow 8)

Hello I'm new to the whole wourld of presioce metals. It all started with collectionthe fifty states quarters, then all coins aspecially gold and silver coins. So as I got farther into resarch on utube and ebay. I desided to try and melt some gold, so I bought some gold flake to melt. Ya no luck blew all over the place or burnt up into nothing. I have no nolige of chemicals or technics or even what half of the stuff on this site is about but thati also why i'm here. any help or guidens or direction will help lots. Lazer steves how to guide is what got me here.

HELLO EVERYBODY . I am interested in precious metals for a long time due to some of my old hobbies like silversmithing , optics and some metal chemistry i don't want to talk about now.I am not going to make a way of living from noble metal recovery 'cause in the place i inhabit seems not worth to do it yet. There is a lot of learning from your topics so i think i will not bug you very soon with my questions. Congrats. Anyway, this is the best site i ever met on the web.

Welcome to the forum, machiavelli976.

Your comments about not choosing to make refining a living is one well made, especially if you choose to process e scrap. It does make an excellent hobby, with great rewards, however.

Please do yourself a favor and start reading Hoke's book. In order for you to process with few issues, having a complete understanding of the steps involved helps tremendously. She outlines each process in easy to understand steps, making it possible for the least qualified person to learn to refine. From her book, you should be able to process most anything you encounter.

Welcome David,
Hokes book is one of the First tools you will need, there are free downloads available on this forum, this book will be a huge resource for you, Also visit Laser Steve’s web site, this also is a great resource, also find the general reaction list, forum book, Hokes testing of metals, reactivity series, Pawnbrokers guide to testing the list goes on, and watch out for gold fever this is a costly disease, with much study you will find this site to be invaluable, great people with no nonsense attitude’s, and it doe's not hurt when we get a little bit of gold from this for those rainy days.

Hi everybody

I am a software engineer by trade but i am also interested in precious metals and refining. I am kind of new to this whole thing and hopefully this forum will help me understand lots of things. Any people from the UK around here who already learned things and have practical experience in gold refining?? Theory is good but it's nice to get an advice from someone who knows it for real. :):):):):):):):):)...i am in Luton...thanks

Hi All!

Im Smitty. I'm 33, I'm ex military, plenty of kids and an ex wife. I'm a back yard hobbyist. I've built a bunch of movie prop replicas and I even built a lifesized stormtrooper display from starwars that stands proudly in my living room. So now my ADHD has brought me here in the quest to learn how to melt and purify gold. Also I am an Electrician by trade so if somebody keeps tripping breakers in thier house drop me a line maybe I can help. I like to photo and video my projects so whatever tasks I take on will be fairly documented. Can't wait to meet ya'll!

Welcome Smitty,

Actually yes I do LoL, I got him standing against the wall opposite front door so the first thing you see when you walk in is good ole' Stormy glaring at you ;) I built his blaster too which is based on the British Sterling SMG. That hobby taught me how to make molds for casting resin parts. I can also do cold cast metals. Thats basically mixing metallic powders in with the plastic resin to look like metals such as bronze and aluminum. I can also cast small pewter parts since the silicone molds will hold up to pewters melting point. I haven't tried it yet but thats what the info sheet said that came with my casting materials.
